Vampirella 1 cover pencils by J-Scott-Campbell Vampirella 1 cover pencils by J-Scott-Campbell
My original "rough" layout pencils for the recently solicited "Vampirella #1" cover from Dynamite Entertainment. This is "looser" than I typically pencil, because it's just penciled with enough information for me to feel comfortable moving forward with the self-inking process.

Penciled with a lead-holder containing "H" lead from an enlarged version of the original sketch using a light-table onto 11x17" 500 smooth Blue-Line brand Bristol board.

Final INKS HERE: Thumbnail Sketches HERE:

This Is Brilliant =0 Quick question! Do you ink over your original pencil sketches? Or do you make copies incase something goes wrong or you change your mind?

The kind of art I like most is pencil one. Simply shows all, the technique inside the art, and the results to obtain.

Sometimes I like sketches more than final work and this is one of those times, I don't know why. Gorgeous.

Oh wow...thanks for posting the pencils..they look awesome...question...what type of H lead do you use? I'm tore between the turqoise and stadlier versions...like the feel of the tuqoise..clean lines...but don't translate well on all paper..and think the stad's to waxy. Just want your take.

super awesome, i love seeing the process, though i do love your pencil work above all else. Have you ever thought of releasing a comic only in it's penciled stage?

Alright, I take it back, I like the first one better. Maybe because it was so small, it seemed like I was leaning more on the 2nd cover. But, I think this one is more subtle. Plus, i really love the background with the roses and the lettering. This was a good choice afterall.

Thank you so much for posting the pencils on this, JSC.

It really helps burgeoning wanna be illustrators like me to see how a master like you renders in lead.

Can I ask a dumb question...do you scan in the 11 x 17 bristol in a large bed scanner?

Cheers,

B

Thanks so much for the info.

**googles it**

Wow. Nice. That model seems to have been replaced by the 10000XL, which looks awesome as well. Next time I have $2499.99 burning a hole in my pocket I'm totally getting one.

Seriously, thanks for the info. Your recommendations on supply and gear have totally helped. I use those lead holders, and lead weights you've recommended in the past and they are SO much better than what I used to use.

That's why I always ask "WWJSCD"?

So thanks again, JSC. XD

H pencils are awesome for the roughs, I also use the HB & B .05 mech pencils for the darker lines. Great job on this :)
