Wicked Witch INKS detail

A close-up more detailed view of my Inks on the recent "Wicked Witch of the West", featured in my newest 2011 "Fairy Tales Fantasies" calendar [link] . Similar to my recently posted Black Widow inks [link] , I used a very similar process and penciled and inked this piece using mostly PITT artist pens on a toothy bristol board so that I could later get this textured surface to her outfit using essentially a "black crayon"! This was my second try at this technique and I think it came out even better this time. There's also some ink spatters in selected masked off areas that were done using a stiff toothbrush!

I'm also quite happy with the combination of different textures going on in this one. There are velvets, suedes, satins, crushed embroidered fabrics, leather, feathers, fur, hair, skin, clouds, rock, wood, straw, copper and rusted metals! All achieved MUCH better with ink than with pencil alone! I often find the beginning comic book artists have the most difficulty depicting "textures" in their early work. I hope this serves as a good example on how textured surfaces can really add to your artwork!
